TA98 footnote | Trigonum auscultationis This triangle is formed by the lateral border of m. trapezius, the medial border of m. rhomboideus major and the superior border of m. latissimus dorsi with fascia over the seventh rib and adjacent intercostal spaces in its floor. With the upper limbs above the head, the triangles are at their largest and auscultation of the superior segments of the lower lobes of the lungs through them is facilitated. However, it has been said that the left triangle was so named because the drip of ingested fluids into the cardia of the stomach could be heard through it and timed in cases of oesophageal obstruction. |
